‘If you’re pushing me’: Rangers assistant names his Player of the Year amid strong competition

Tbere are several candidates who could justifiably make a claim for being Rangers’ Player of the Year.

Veterans Steven Davis and Allan McGregor have rolled back the years during their second spells at the club, while Connor Goldson has been a rock at the back in a team that has shipped just 10 goals during 33 Premiership matches.

For assistant manager Gary McAllister, however, it’s James Tavernier who deserves the honour.

The captain’s statistics make for impressive reading. 17 goals and 15 assists is a noteworthy haul for an attacking player, but Tavernier has racked up those numbers from right-back.

He will lift the Premiership trophy next month, and the Englishman has been a huge factor in Rangers’ unbeaten run to the title.

The 29-year-old also topped a recent of Rangers supporters, with 41.3% considering him their Player of the Year.

As quoted by the , McAllister says there are a number of candidates but Tavernier gets his vote.

The former Liverpool and Leeds United midfielder said: “The two lads that have just signed new contracts, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, have been outstanding.

“There’s also been Tav, Connor Goldson and Ryan Kent.

“Alfredo Morelos has probably not had the season he’s had in the past, but in the last six-to-eight weeks of the league games, he really came to the fore.

“If you were pushing me – and I am not going to sit on the fence here – I’d probably go for James Tavernier.

“He’s played a real captain’s part.”
