If Leeds sign Ander Iturraspe, Adam Forshaw has his work cut out
Leeds United are on the brink of returning to the Premier League for the first time since relegation in 2004. It has seen Marcelo Bielsa’s side already begin to be linked with some big-name players.
Liverpool playmaker Harry Wilson was one of those, and most recently is Spain international Ander Iturraspe. The 30-year-old worked with Bielsa at Basque club Bilbao – where Iturraspe has remained for his entire career.
However, the holding midfielder has managed just four appearances in all competitions this season. According to Spanish newspaper Leeds are looking to land the midfielder when his contract expires in June.
Leeds do have depth in the middle of the park. Kalvin Phillips is the club’s best holding midfielder and indeed first choice, while Adam Forshaw is back-up. He is currently injured.
The £4.5million () signing in January 2018 has shown in glimpses that he can play at the base of the midfield, but mistakes in the crucial 3-1 loss to Norwich City has left Leeds fans with a sour taste in the mouth.
There is no question that Iturraspe would be an immense signing. One that would be a key player if Leeds were to gain promotion to the Premier League. But he would also push Forshaw down the pecking order.
With Matuesz Klich, Tyler Roberts, Jamie Shackleton and Pablo Hernandez all shining in the attacking midfield positions, Forshaw has little chance of making a breakthrough.
It is cause for concern for the former Middlesbrough and Everton midfielder. The signing of Iturraspe would certainly threaten his position at Elland Road this summer.
