Ian Wright says World Cup winner is amongst the most underrated Arsenal players of all-time

Ian Wright has named the most underrated players Arsenal have ever had – with the former striker including one World Cup winner in his list.

Arsenal are obviously one of the most successful clubs in English football history, having won the top-flight on 13 occasions and the FA Cup 14 times.

Some of the all-time greats have represented the Gunners. Certainly, you could not argue with anyone who believes that they had the greatest player to have ever played in the Premier League in Thierry Henry.

But with that, they have also had a number of players who have probably not got the full credit they deserved.

“Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould from my time, probably Martin Keown. David Hillier, I’ve got to mention him. Kevin Campbell, I thought was very underrated. I think Manny Petit, obviously to win the World Cup with France,” he said.

Emmanuel Petit overshadowed by midfield partner at Highbury

Of course, the discussion surrounding the most underrated players is always going to be divided, as players are considered underrated for various reasons.

Figures such as Nigel Winterburn and Steve Bould formed key parts of that famous Arsenal backline which gave away so little for so many years.

Emmanuel Petit was probably overshadowed by the fact that he played alongside Patrick Vieira, who was such a game-changing signing for Arsenal. Interestingly, it was Petit who started the World Cup final in 1998, with Vieira actually coming off the bench.

But Vieira was at Highbury a lot longer, and formed brilliant partnerships with the likes of Edu and Gilberto Silva too after Petit had left for Barcelona.

Petit’s career would never return to the heights he hit while at Arsenal, which perhaps explains why Wright feels that he does not get the full credit he deserves.
