Arsenal beat Brentford to go six points behind Liverpool and former striker Ian Wright has admitted to being over the moon to see a couple of Gunners contribute.
While Ethan Nwaneri impressed in Bukayo Saka’s absence, Arsenal still needed other players to step up to the plate, especially with a sickness bug troubling the team beforehand.
But that’s exactly what Mikel Arteta got from his team. Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino both got much-needed goals, while Gabriel Jesus also continued his return to form.
For Arsenal, getting those squad players up and running and contributing is going to be vital to any title push.
And according to Ian Wright, both Martinelli and Jesus have now realised they need to step up.

Ian Wright makes point about Arsenal duo Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus
Speaking on the game for , Wright was happy to see his former club pick up the win.
However, he reserved special comment for Martinelli and Jesus, admitting he was happy to see them step up.
“I’m delighted to see those two players [Martinelli and Jesus] finding form at a time when Arsenal need it most.” Wright said.
“They are scoring goals, playing well and contributing. They’ve realised this season how important their contribution is going to be, you just hope it can continue for both of them.”
Can Jesus and Martinelli do enough while Saka is out?
The big problem Arsenal have going into January is that their main man, Bukayo Saka, is now missing.
We saw earlier on in the season how Martin Odegaard’s absence caused the Gunners a big problem and we could have a similar situation with Saka.
Yes, Martinelli and Jesus have done well of late but they have to stay fit, and then they have to keep consistent when they do get the chance.
For now, Mikel Arteta will be happy to see the pair contributing. But over the rest of the season, he will want and demand even more.
