Ian Wright blown away by Arsenal ace who ‘looked sharp and dangerous’ last night

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has spoken highly of Reiss Nelson following the 20-year-old’s impressive performance as the Gunners reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Monday night.

Mikel Arteta named a youthful Arsenal side for the fifth-round trip to League One side and former FA Cup winners Portsmouth, with six players aged 20 and under.

Nelson impressed with two assists in the game as the Gunners took the lead through Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who met his teammate’s cross on the volley just before the break.

Though Portsmouth battled valiantly, Arsenal were too strong for them and doubled their advantage in the 51st minute as Eddie Nketiah bundled home from close range, again from a Nelson delivery.

Wright shared his thoughts about the game on his Twitter feed and praised the Arsenal academy graduate, who is yet to make a Premier League start this calendar year but whose display will likely have given Arteta serious food for thought.

TBR View:

Nelson is by no means a rookie, having made s for Arsenal, but just as he was starting to establish himself in the senior setup around and just after the festive period, a hamstring injury sustained in January saw him have to spend time on the sidelines.

Now back from the injury, Arteta gave Nelson a full 90 minutes against Portsmouth and it proved an inspired decision as he thoroughly impressed, so surely more game time beckons for the “special talent”, in the Spaniard’s words ().

Likewise, getting such a glowing endorsement from a legend of the club – indeed, a legend of the game – such as Wright will mean the world to Nelson and fill him with confidence.
