Ian Wright and Danny Mills agree on incident during Arsenal win over Leeds
Arsenal’s win over Leeds United on Sunday evening summed up what has been an inconsistent season for both sides, with The Gunners finally coming out on top – but Ian Wright and Danny Mills have agreed that a mistake was made by the officials.
The Gunners came into the match having picked up just one point from their last possible nine, while Leeds were in good form – winning three of their last four including a 3-1 away win over Leicester City and a 2-0 home victory over Crystal Palace.
But it was Arsenal who hit the ground running. With 48 minutes on the clock, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had netted a hat-trick – his first ever in the Premier League – while Hector Bellerin also scored. Illan Meslier to blame for a couple of the goals.
Leeds came roaring back, though. Showing that they never give up and stick to their principles, Pascal Struijk and Helder Costa made the scoreline less embarrassing. Patrick Bamford went through on goal, only to be blocked by Gabriel and Cedric Soares.
The referee waved away claims from the Leeds side that it was a penalty, which would have given Leeds the chance to make it 4-3. Both Mills and Wright commented on the incident, and believe Leeds should have been awarded a spotkick.

: “There’s no attempt to play the ball from either Arsenal defender. If that’s on the halfway line, it’s given as a foul. Why shouldn’t it be given as a foul, and a penalty given?
Wright, meanwhile, told “I had real Newcastle vibes coming into my head. once he goes through, he’s impeded him [Bamford]. That is a foul outside of the box, and Leeds should feel hard done by on that one.”
TBR’s view – Cedric surely at fault?
It is not so much Gabriel’s involvement in the incident, though clearly, Bamford is sandwiched and a foul would have been given anywhere else on the pitch. It is more that Cedric runs across Bamford, rather than staying side by side.
Leeds were excellent towards the end of the second half and as Wright says, a third goal might have given Leeds the impetus to go on and secure a point – like Newcastle did when the late Cheick Tiote volleyed home. Instead, Leeds are licking their wounds.
