Ian Holloway backs Marcelo Bielsa to turn Kalvin Phillips into England international

Former Championship manager Ian Holloway has been discussing the form of Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United and suggested Gareth Southgate will have him in mind for an England call-up.

Holloway suggested that whilst Phillips was not yet ready for an England call-up, continuing to thrive under Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road could easily make him a prime candidate for the future.

“Our England manager Gareth Southgate tends to go for younger talent so there might be a place in that defensive midfield role.

If I was Phillips I’d be targeting that with the help of my magnificent manager Bielsa. He will be teaching him how to coordinate his attacking players into a high press – exactly like England do at international level.

“Would I pick him yet – I’m not sure personally…From what I’ve seen he seems to have the quality needed especially if he keeps progressing as he has done recently.”

TBR’s View

Leeds United fans will undoubtedly agree with Holloway except for one point. Many fans at Elland Road are already of the opinion that Phillips is good enough to play for England.

Gareth Southgate is already said to be a fan of Phillips’. Phillips was one of several Championship players on the England manager’s radar for the future.

Leeds United, of course, rejected several transfer bids for Phillips in the summer and are hopeful that they can win Premier League promotion this season in order to keep the local lad at Elland Road.

If they can, then perhaps Leeds could have an England international in their midfield in the near future.
