‘I would be surprised’… £10m West Ham player is now unlikely to leave in January

Ahead of what could be a busy January transfer window for David Moyes and West Ham United, one player now seems unlikely to leave.

Perhaps the biggest objective for West Ham in January will be the recruitment of a striker, however, it’s now the future of one of their defenders that seems uncertain.

Thilo Kehrer arrived in East London for last summer and looked an astute signing, a German international with a ton of versatility.

However, that flexible profile has perhaps hindered the 27-year-old’s chances, who has failed to nail down a certain position.

That being said, there is now increasing talk that Kehrer could leave Moyes’ West Ham in January.

However, when speaking to , journalist Paul Brown didn’t think that would be the case.

Brown said: “Kehrer hasn’t made a big impact this season, but I think West Ham will not be wanting to weaken their squad in any way in January.

“So I would be surprised if they allowed a player like that to leave.

“They’re expecting to play a lot of games again this season, they’re going to have issues in terms of the depth of their squad when we get to the spring, and I don’t think it’s very likely that Kehrer leaves.

“If by the summer he’s not playing still and hasn’t found a way to force his way back into the thinking of the manager, then it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s allowed to leave.”

David Moyes unlikely to sanction January departure for West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer

Given the additions West Ham have made at centre-back of late, perhaps Kehrer’s best chance will come at right-back.

Unfortunately for him, Vladimir Coufal has recovered some of his better form this season, a player who is producing strong attacking threat.

So whilst it would be a shame for The Hammers to lose an excellent squad player like Kehrer, it would be understandable if the defender was growing frustrated.

As mentioned earlier, a striker perhaps should be the priority business for Moyes’ West Ham in January.

It is remarkable to consider what the side have achieved of late without an instinctive goal scorer to support Jarrod Bowen’s efforts.

However, one of West Ham’s current players does now seem determined to turn around his form and prove fan opinion wrong
