Liverpool youngster Sepp van den Berg has revealed that he wants to stay and fight for a place under Jurgen Klopp next season instead of going out on loan again.

The now 20-year-old joined the Reds from Dutch side Zwolle back in the summer of 2019. A lot was expected of him and thanks to his position and nationality, comparisons with Virgil van Dijk quickly surfaced.

Van den Berg, however, has only played four times for Liverpool’s senior side. He was sent out on loan to Preston North End in February last year, and he has played a lot for them over the last 15 months.

The Dutchman, , is set to return to Anfield this summer, and he believes there’s a chance he can become a starter for Liverpool next season.

Sepp van den Berg wants to stay at Liverpool next season

Speaking about his future, Van den Berg said, as quoted by : “The intention is that I participate in the preparation and then conquer my spot in the dressing room.

“At the same time, I know that the competition is cut-throat. This summer, I will fight for a place in the starting line-up.

“That’s what I hope for; that’s what I dream of (playing with Van Dijk). That’s my goal towards next season.

“The World Cup can help me with that. It will be a long and tough season. A lot of guys will leave or be away temporarily. Then maybe you get the chance to stay just a little bit earlier. I must then see to take that.”

TBR View:

Liverpool boast the second-best defence in the Premier League this season. Only Manchester City have conceded fewer goals than Jurgen Klopp’s side this term, and their centre-halves deserve a ton of credit.

Van Dijk is the main man, but his partners at the back have delivered too. Joel Matip has been absolutely incredible for Liverpool, while young Ibrahima Konate has impressed as well in his first season at the club.

Joe Gomez, a phenomenal centre-half in his own right, has barely got a look in as a result, which makes you wonder if Van den Berg has any chance to break into Klopp’s side next season.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the 20-year-old this summer, but if his words are anything to go by, he wants to stay at Liverpool this summer and has no plans of heading out on loan again.
