‘I was surprised’… Thierry Henry left shocked by what Mikel Arteta has said this week

Thierry Henry has admitted that he was shocked after hearing what Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has said this week.

Speaking on last night, the Arsenal legend reflected on Arteta’s post-match rant after the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

Arsenal got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory against Sevilla last night but tempers boiled over on Saturday after a frustrating week for Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners boss labelled the decision to award Anthony Gordon’s winning goal at St James’ Park an ‘’.

Arsenal came out with a the following day and backed their manager, stating the PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating in the Premier League.

And while Thierry Henry says he understands Arteta’s frustration, he was ‘surprised’ to hear the Arsenal boss talking about the incident before the Sevilla game.

Henry shocked by Arteta’s comments this week

Speaking on CBS Sports, Henry gave his verdict on the fallout after Newcastle’s controversial 1-0 win over Arsenal.

“The manager behaved how the manager would behave at the end of the game,” Henry said. “I’ve been in that situation where you feel like your team got robbed. You don’t look at that opposition.

“For me, I think Kai Havertz should have been sent off for the tackle which sparked the game, because after that it became a chaotic game.

“But at the end of the game you need to understand when a coach goes to speak to the press he can’t cool off, it’s very difficult for him not to get upset.

“What I think was annoying for him was what he said about the Liverpool game at Tottenham. You can see ‘they are trying to make the best decision, we need to understand that mistakes happen’.

“Then when it happens to your team, you see what he said and it’s something that you always do as a coach.

“You defend your team and your players. Where I was surprised was to mention it three or four days later. After the club made a statement, whether you like it or you don’t, you could have left it there and said look the club talked let’s move on and concentrate on the game against Sevilla.

“I don’t think it was necessary to reiterate that three or four days later.”

Arteta stood by his comments in the build-up to last night’s game and insisted that he will stand by his club.

And in fairness to the Arsenal boss, he was questioned heavily by the media about his post-match rant.

The Spaniard was also quizzed on the club releasing a statement and he has every right to answer these questions honestly.
