‘I was surprised’… Alasdair Gold admits he’s shocked £22m player is still at Tottenham

Journalist Alasdair Gold has now admitted his shock that one Tottenham Hotspur player didn’t depart in the January transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy did have an incredibly productive month, one that progressed the squad a step further to the end goal.

Radu Dragusin replaced Eric Dier’s spot in the squad, whereas Hugo Lloris’ wages perhaps cleared the way for Timo Werner to arrive on loan.

However, it did feel as if a couple more faces may have departed before the window closed.

Perhaps Bryan Gil and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg seemed most likely, two players on the periphery of things when everyone is fit.

But despite the speculation, both remained and will likely do so until the end of the campaign.

And when speaking on ‘’, Alasdair Gold admitted his shock that Bryan Gil was still a Tottenham player.

The journalist explained why he believes the Spaniard is so settled at the club, and therefore happy to bide his time.

He explained that Gil will assess his options in the coming summer, but the journalist also thought that the winger may have lost the trust of his manager by this point.

Gold said: “I was surprised [about Gil staying at Spurs], because there was an option there to go to Brighton, didn’t take it.

“He loves the style of football Postecoglou plays, I think you can’t underestimate how settled he is within this group of Spanish speaking players Tottenham have got there.

“I think they do everything together, even like today on their day off, I think he and Pedro Porro were in Canary Wharf playing padel together, they’re all very very tight knit.

“I think for him it’s a case, bit like [Ryan] Sessegnon, get to the summer, see what the options are then.

“But I just have this feeling, there’s so many people in front of him at Spurs right now and whether Ange truly trusts him, I don’t know.”

Of course, fans might imagine that Spurs would be keen to recoup a lot of the that saw Gil arrive at the club.

Although it hasn’t worked for him in England, the 22-year-old clearly still has a lot of untapped potential.

And despite Alasdair Gold’s shock that he’s still a Tottenham player, he might still play some kind of role before the season ends.

All that being said, one former England international has now described his move to Spurs as the biggest mistake of his career
