‘I thought he’d struggle’… Graeme Souness admits one Tottenham Hotspur man has proven him totally wrong

Graeme Souness has named the Tottenham Hotspur man he expected to really struggle this season, and who has really surprised him with how well he has done.

Spurs have certainly been one of the stories of the season. They find themselves in the title conversation coming towards the end of January. And that is a remarkable contrast with where the club were over the second-half of the previous campaign.

Of course, for many, the key moment was the appointment of Ange Postecoglou in the summer. The Australian looked to have a massive job on his hands, picking up the pieces from Antonio Conte’s tenure.

He was also dealt the blow of losing Harry Kane on the eve of the new Premier League season. Nevertheless, Spurs absolutely flew out of the blocks.

Only injuries have held them back this season. Tottenham play some of the most exciting football in the division. And despite the injuries, they remain not too far adrift of the summit.

Speaking on , Graeme Souness suggested that he is a big fan of Postecoglou considering that he was not optimistic about his chances of being a success in North London.

“I thought he’d struggle, because you’ve taken Harry’s goals out the equation, so you’re thinking where are the goals going to come from? I think he’s done really, really well at Spurs. The first thing he got on side was the media, they seem to like him. He’s got a lovely way with him. I’ve only met him the once when he was in Scotland, in an Italian restaurant, absolutely charming,” he said.

“He told me a story, he was a ballboy. Scotland, we had to go play Australia in a World Cup qualifier in 86. And he said he was a ballboy at the ground at Melbourne where we played. And he was charming. He comes across as an honest guy.”

Spurs have incredibly bright future ahead

There was always a sense of intrigue over how Postecoglou would fare. For many of us, his time at Celtic was the first we had really heard of the 58-year-old.

Celtic were outstanding during his tenure. But obviously, many will suggest that that comes with the caveat that the Hoops are almost always the big favourites to win the Scottish Premiership.

However, any remaining doubts over Postecoglou have been put to bed emphatically. Tottenham have been a revelation. And Spurs fans have reason to be incredibly excited about their future again.
