He suffered two relegations in one season before signing a £190,000-a-week contract at Manchester United

Suffering relegation from the Premier League must be up there with the worst feelings in football.

Jobs are lost behind the scenes, the best players often leave to remain in the highest division, and visits to England’s elite stadiums such as Anfield and Old Trafford are no more for the supporter🌃s.

However, some find their way back from the darkness of relegation, few more emphatically than Harry Maguire – who experienced a bizarre route towards an eventual £80m move to Manchester United.

How Harry Maguire ended up at Manchester United in truly unique fashion

Five years prior to the England international signing a contract at Old Trafford in August 2019,𝓰 he experienced a mind boggling season.

Maguire started the 2014/15 campaign playing UEFA Europa League football with Hull City, who earned a ticket into the competition thanks to reaching the FA Cup final the season beforehand, as Arsenal had already qualified for Europe and did not need the prize of UEFA Euroꦐpa League football given to FA Cup winners.

However, it was one of just six appearance𒁃s he made for the Tigers before falling out of favo📖ur under Steve Bruce, and the towering defender was eventually loaned to Wigan Athletic for the second half of that season.

Maguire made 16 Championship appearances for the Latics in that 2014/15 campaign, but could not prevent Wigan from slipping into Le💛ague One.

Hull City had also suffered r♛elegation from the Premier League while the Shꦏeffield-born defender was out on loan, meaning he had technically seen two relegations added to his CV in one season.

Despite that, Maguire ultimately broke his way into the starting XI at the KCOM Stadium to become one of England’s most impressive defenders, starring for England at the 2018 World Cup before that aforementioned £80m move to Manch🦹ester United followed in August 2019.

Very few players can say they suffered a double-relegation before becoming the most expensive defender in the history of f𒆙ootball five years later, although it is testement to Maguire’s character that he managed to bounce back in such fine fashion.

Ruben Amorim has a decision to make with Harry Maguire

Maguire, who Harry Kane called “scary”, is near𝄹ing the end of that six-year, £190,000-a-week🗹 contract he signed back in August 2019.

The 31-year-old becomes a free agent at the end of the season as things stand🦹, so Ruben Amorim must take a good look at the Englishman to decide whether he is♍ worth keeping around next season.

So far, the Portuguese tactician has given Maguire – who David Moyes hated facing – 118 minu🧔tes of Premier League football in his first four games since replacing Erik ten Hag, so at least he is getti♍ng a chance to impress.
