‘I really thought’… Paul Merson says ‘fantastic’ player has really shocked him after leaving Arsenal
Willian is a Premier League legend, but the less said about his Arsenal stint the better.
Indeed, as talented as the Brazilian is, he was truly terrible during his solitary season at Arsenal, and it looked as though Old Father Time had finally caught up with him.
Willian was shipped out to Brazil after just one year at the Emirates, and after failing to perform for Corinthians, it looked like his career was over.
However, the winger was thrown a lifeline last summer as Fulham came in and signed him on deadline day.
Nobody was expecting much from Willian at this point of his career, but somehow, he’s turned back the clock and is now one of Fulham’s best players.
Writing in his column for , Paul Merson has been full of praise for the South American, noting just how shocked he has been by Willian’s resurgence at Fulham, claiming that he thought he would fade away after his time at Arsenal.

Merson shocked by Willian
The pundit shared his verdict on the Fulham winger.
“Willian has been fantastic for Fulham this season. For someone of his age to produce the goods at the top level is so impressive, I really thought he would fade away after his underwhelming stint with Arsenal. Certain players fit certain clubs and Willian fits Fulham like a glove,” Merson wrote.
Nobody saw this coming
In all honesty, Merson isn’t the only person Willian has proven wrong.
The winger has been so much better than anyone expected since joining Fulham.
At Arsenal and Corinthians, it looked as though Willian’s legs had gone and he was truly poor, but at Fulham, he’s sharper and faster than ever before, and he’s doing it against top teams on a weekly basis.
In all honesty, Willian is probably still good enough to play for a top side, and as strange as this sounds, he’d probably do a job in this Arsenal team right now as a depth option.
