‘I like’: Sky Sports pundit hails ‘aggressive’ Arsenal newcomer who’s hit the ground running

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has been praised by Sky Sports pundit Joleon Lescott after his impressive start to life for Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

In September, Arsenal announced the signing of the 22-year-old defender from Lille on a long-term contract, reporting a fee of £27million.

Gabriel has hit the ground running for the Gunners, clocking up eight appearances in all competitions including six Premier League starts.

The Brazilian ace was especially impressive away at Manchester United, helping Arsenal leave Old Trafford with all three points and a clean sheet.

Gabriel was solid at the back, keeping the strong opposition attack of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood at bay successfully, and repelling everything that came his way.

On Friday, Lescott joined Adam Smith and Sam Quek on show, helping put together October’s top-flight team of the month.

Results are compared from the statistical Power Rankings with fans’ votes for Kings of the Match on the Premier League website.

Gabriel, second in the Kings of the Match table, was picked by Lescott in the XI of the month.

“I also went for Gabriel,” the former Manchester City, Everton, Wolves and England ace told . “He’s new to the Premier League and he looks like he’s played here for a number of years.

“He’s aggressive, which I like, and hasn’t made many mistakes. He’s played in different positions, on the left and in the middle of a three – so he has a good understanding of different roles.”

While Thomas Partey was Arsenal’s most high-profile signing of the transfer window just gone, Gabriel is also rightfully being recognised as a superb signing and one of several Arteta masterstrokes this year.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penning a new contract, some great arrivals at the Emirates Stadium and former fringe players – Rob Holding and Mohamed Elneny, for example – now becoming crucial first-teamers, things are looking great in the red half of North London.
