Player Everton sold for just £3.4m now inspiring a shock title charge at new club
Everton’s 4-0 hammering by Manchester United once again highlighted the oh-so familiar failings which have dominated much of the Sean Dyche era.
Not for the first time, and probably not for the last, Everton were left ruing the chances they missed when the game was still level and Ruben Amorim’s team were feeling their way into their rhythm.
Beto sent one wayward shot into the M52 before hitting the side netting from a tight angle after rounding Andre Onana.
And, when Dominic Calvert-Lewin entered proceedings, the story remained the same even if the characters had changed. His header, one which would have been only a consolation at that point anyway with Everton 4-0 down, was brilliantly saved from almost point-blank range by the excellent Onana.
Between them, Beto and Calvert-Lewin have only three Premier League goals in 2024/25.
And while Neal Maupay’s own tally of two from nine Marseille appearances won’t have many on Merseyside wishing they could have put their differences with the fiery Frenchman aside – a relationship which became increasingly strained until reaching breaking point as Maupay left Goodison Park under a cloud – the fact remains that, once again, it is The Toffees who appear to have come out of this situation worse off.
Some things never change.

Everton flop Neal Maupay helping inspire Marseille title charge
Maupay’s tally of two goals in nine games certainly looks more impressive when viewed from a different angle.
If you factor in the games he has started, and his assists, then his record stands at five ‘goal contributions’ from six Marseille starts.
Operating as the link-man alongside an in-form Mason Greenwood – TBR understands Barcelona and Real Madrid are eyeing the ex-Manchester United forward – Maupay set up both of Marseille’s opening goals in the 3-1 win at Lens last week.
It was his clever header, meanwhile, turned home by Luiz Henrique as Roberto de Zerbi’s team overtook Monaco into second. A dramatic 2-1 win at the Stade Velodrome which cut the gap between themselves and leaders Paris Saint-Germain by a further two points.
Maupay, who will cost Marseille just £3.4 million when the obligation-to-buy clause in his contract is triggered, is even keeping £20 million man Elye Wahi out of De Zerbi’s XI at present. And few would have imagined that when Maupay returned to France, seemingly to act as an experienced back-up to more expensive and exalted frontmen.
Roberto de Zerbi lauds Maupay impact at Ligue 1 challengers
“Maupay is doing things well,” former Brighton boss De Zerbi tells reporters of Maupay, the latest somewhat controversial character to join Marseille’s ragtag bunch of misfits and unwitting headline-makers.
“I am still in love with Wahi as a player, with his qualities. [But] Maupay has more experience, he also knows [Marseille’s] style. There is an age difference. I think Neal [was born in] 1996, Wahi in 2003, so it ia different experience [levels].
“As for the characteristics, the number nine must know how to score, of course, but also play, press better.”
This, Maupay bringing his team mates into the game, embracing the role of facilitator, is perhaps the biggest factor in De Zerbi’s decision to relegate Elye Wahi to the bench. Marseille have the luxury of being able to share their goals around, after all, with the form of Greenwood, Henrique and co easing the burden on Maupay’s shoulders.
Back at Everton, Sean Dyche just needs someone, anyone, to score the goals The Toffees crave.
