‘I hope’… Son Heung-min names three Tottenham players who need to score more goals whilst he’s away

Losing Son Heung-min to the Asian Cup this month is a huge blow for Tottenham Hotspur and the side will find more goals whilst he’s away.

Since being handed the captaincy by Ange Postecoglou, Son has had a new energy, a player unrecognisable from last season.

And the captain has been leading by example with his 12 goals in 20 Premier League games.

Second to Son is Richarlison, who now has six goals in his 17 appearances, a clear drop off in numbers.

And although the Brazilian is now improving, Son has called for him to add more goals to his game whilst he’s away, along with two other players.

Son was speaking via before he left for Qatar, and named three Tottenham players that he hoped would now substitute for his goals.

He said: “Richy is doing a fantastic job, I hope he is hungry for more goals, also Deki and Brennan.

“I hope everybody who is playing attacking positions can score as many goals as possible and bring us to a better position. I wish it more than anything else.”

Of course, that trio may also be boosted by the arrival of a forward in January.

One ‘world class’ striker is now being linked with a move to Spurs, a player Rodrigo Bentancur is already a big fan of.

And the good news doesn’t stop there as James Maddison’s injury return date has now also been shared.

There’s no doubt that it will be difficult to navigate the period in which Son is missing, but Tottenham do have goals elsewhere.

Although perhaps not a goal-scorer, Giovani Lo Celso delivered a timely reminder of his quality against Bournemouth on Sunday.

Providing two assists, the Argentinian could prove crucial in the number 10 role allowing Dejan Kulusevski to head back out wide.

There’s certainly options for Spurs, even if Bryan Gil and Alejo Veliz do then represent a slight drop-off.

Tottenham clearly need to add a new forward in January, if not for their goals but to add much needed strength in depth.

Son’s absence would be felt by any club, but Spurs could still be well-equipped to cope.
