‘I don’t mean to be disrespectful but’: Craig Levein gives his opinion on Rangers player
Glasgow Rangers defender Nathan Patterson has been described as a “lucky boy” by Craig Levein in wake of the Ibrox gem’s call-up to Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad.
The Auchenhowie prodigy was in and around the Rangers first team last year and has built on it this season, particularly in wake of James Tavernier’s injury.
To date, Patterson has made 16 senior appearances for Rangers, 14 of which have come in 2020-21, including seven in the Scottish Premiership and five in the Europa League.
The 19-year-old has been doing so well that calls for him to be included in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad have been growing throughout the season.
And on Wednesday, the Scotland squad announcement for the upcoming Euros confirmed that Patterson has indeed made the cut.
With only Stephen O’Donnell ahead of the Gers man in the pecking order at right-back, Levein is concerned and believes Clarke must have a lot of faith in the youngster.
“As much as I’m a huge admirer of Nathan Patterson, I think it’s early for him,” Levein told BBC Sportsound, as per the . “But he is a talent.
“What’s interesting about him is when I look at the squad of 26 players, there’s really only O’Donnell in front of him. If Stevie goes with a back five, he can play Ryan Fraser there.
“But he’s obviously got a lot of faith in young Nathan Patterson to have him as back up in that one key position.
“I don’t mean to be disrespectful but he’s a lucky boy. At his age to be included in the first Scotland squad to be announced for a major tournament in 23 years. I hope he does really well.”
