‘I don’t get the impression he’s that good’: Watts believes player Arsenal reportedly want to sign ‘isn’t great’

Arsenal have been linked with Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo in recent weeks.

Indeed, recently claimed that the Gunners have submitted a £6million bid for him and are in talks with his club.

Grimaldo has developed into one of the Primeira Liga’s finest full-backs over the past few years.

He has bagged 14 goals and 40 assists from 143 top flight appearances in Portugal.

In his most recent season, Grimaldo provided 10 goal contributions in just 28 outings.

Given Kieran Tierney is first choice at Arsenal, whoever comes in would likely be a deputy.

And while Grimaldo seems like a decent enough shout, Charles Watts is unsure over a potential move for the player.

The Goal.com correspondent – speaking on – says he has spoken to people about the 26-year-old.

And Watts says he doesn’t “get the impression that he’s that good”, highlighting that Nuno Tavares is “younger” and “something to work with”.

“What’s the point?”

Watts said: “There’s lots of stuff about Grimaldo at Benfica and I was speaking to someone over there about it and the details I’ve got are quite sketchy.

Referring to reports of Arsenal having made bids, he said: “I haven’t heard that myself.

“I’ve heard that there has been sort of discussions about him, that he’s not going to cost too much money and they’ve obviously got Kieran Tierney there as well.

“It remains to be seen what they do if they go for the sort of cheap back-up option like Grimaldo.

“Personally, I’m not sure they should – and that’s just me talking as a fan, almost.

“People I’ve spoken to about him don’t really – I don’t get the impression that he’s that good.

“You’ve already got Tavares who, yeah, I know he’s not had the best of first seasons but he did show flashes.

“He’s younger, he’s something to work with, and I’m not sure replacing him with someone sort of 6-7 years older who, again, isn’t great… what’s the point?

“But remains to be seen.”
