‘I cannot lie’, ‘Powerful’ player Celtic sold in January opens up on his relationship with Ange Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou was well-known at Celtic for keeping his distance from the players. The Aussie admitted himself that he never gets too close to players at any club he has worked at as it can cloud his judgement when a big decision needs to be made.

However, what he was brilliant at was getting players to trust in his style and buy into it and he trusted them in turn to carry out his instructions on the park.

During his time at Celtic, Postecoglou built a harmonious dressing room. There never seemed to be any issues behind the scenes. That was until January of this year.

Celtic sold two players in that window in Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis. Juranovic headed to the Bundesliga whilst the Greek striker headed to the MLS.

Speaking about his move to the US, Giakoumakis said he was surprised to leave Celtic and opened up on his relationship with Ange Postecoglou at that time.

Giakoumakis said [], “It’s certainly a surprise to leave one of the biggest clubs in the world for the MLS.

“I wouldn’t think to leave Celtic if several things didn’t go wrong, and many of them were completely wrong.

“I cannot lie. My relationship with the manager wasn’t great, at the end of the day. We never had a specific fight, but he didn’t trust me as much as I wanted to feel trusted.”

Giorgos Giakoumakis isn’t telling the whole Celtic story

Whilst I have sympathy with the Greek striker’s plight at Celtic. The reason he wasn’t being selected wasn’t just down to not being trusted or feeling as though he wasn’t trusted.

It was simply down to the form of Kyogo Furuhashi. The Japan international was red-hot at Celtic last season and finished as the SPFL top goalscorer.

The £4.6m signing from Vissel Kobe also won Celtic’s Player of the Year and the Scottish Premiership’s Player of the Year. He was on fire.

Giakoumakis was just a good striker at Celtic at the wrong time. There is no doubt that had Kyogo not been at the club he would have been Postecoglou’s number one striker.

It is also well known that Giakoumakis’ Instagram activity at that time and it was his public show of frustration that also helped push him towards the exit door.

The ‘powerful‘ striker is now enjoying life at Atlanta United and the Celtic fans will look back at his short time at the club with fondness.
