‘I asked him’: Conte says he’s asked £27m Spurs player if he’s happy to be on the bench v Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has provided an update on Steven Bergwijn’s fitness ahead of the Arsenal game.

Spurs are in north London derby action on Sunday, hosting Mikel Arteta’s Gunners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Conte’s charges have some problems up front, with Son Heung-min on the sidelines due to a muscle injury.

Likewise, Bergwijn hasn’t been available for a number of games, but Conte confirmed on Friday that he’s now available.

The £27million winger has not played for Spurs since their Boxing Day victory over Crystal Palace because of a calf injury.

Conte, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Arsenal game, acknowledged that Bergwijn isn’t fully fit.

The Italian said he asked his player about his availability to make the bench against the Gunners.

“Steven Bergwijn, for example, is a player that has recovered from his injury,” Conte told .

“He had two training sessions with us. For sure he is not 100 percent fit in this moment, but I needed him to come on the bench, to stay with us.

“I asked him his availability for the game against Arsenal, because for me he’s an important option after Son was injured.

“In this moment we have only two strikers, Harry and Lucas, and then there is Bergwijn. And then also there is Scarlett, he’s also recovering from an injury.”

With the January transfer window open, Bergwijn’s future at Tottenham has come under intense speculation.

The recently reported that Ajax failed with an initial £15million bid for the Dutchman and will attempt a follow-up offer.

Tottenham are reportedly open to selling Bergwijn and hope to recoup as much of their £27million outlay as possible.
