‘I also want to mention Newcastle’: Federico Fernandez makes claim about the Magpies after leaving
There was plenty of transfer activity at Newcastle United this summer, with players arriving and leaving.
Eddie Howe had to make a lot of tough decisions on who to let go as his squad started to grow.
One player who left the club was Federico Fernandez, and the 33-year-old decided to join Elche in La Liga.
The Argentinian centre-back ended his four year stay at St. James’ Park on deadline day.
He also admitted the club treated him brilliantly once he had told Newcastle his decision to go.
“I also want to mention Newcastle, where I have been very comfortable and where they treated me wonderfully to respect my decision to leave.
“The market is long and from the beginning of the season I wanted to move. He wanted to think it over with the family to make the right decision. Offers came while I was training in preseason.”
Fernandez wanted to leave Newcastle all summer
Fernandez’s admission about wanting to the leave Newcastle is no real surprise.
The former Swansea City defender spent much of last season out of Eddie Howe’s plans after sustaining a thigh injury.
Howe also brought in Dan Burn and Sven Botman to improve his centre-back options, pushing Fernandez down the pecking order.
With Fernandez approaching the twilight of his career, a move was always likely to be on the cards.
Staying in one of Europe’s top leagues should continue to test Fernandez at the highest level.
, and was keen for him to train with the first team.
However, it’s likely Howe already knew of Fernandez’s wishes to leave Newcastle this summer, and wanted to keep him fit in case an opportunity for him to leave arose.
Fernandez clearly appreciated how the club approached his decision to want to move on.
His replacement Sven Botman has already impressed Howe, and stepped up in Fernandez’s absence.
While Dan Burn has also been one of Newcastle’s best performers this season, even though he’s been deployed out of position.
