How Twitter reacted to Tottenham’s signing of Swansea striker Fernando Llorente from under Chelsea’s nose
Tottenham provided one of the shocks of the transfer window as they have emerged from nowhere to complete the signing of Swansea striker Fernando Llorente, as confirmed on their club website.
Sky Sports journalist claims that the deal has cost the Lilywhites just £12 million, and that the 32-year-old will put pen to paper on a two year contract with an option for a further year.
For much of the summer, Llorente was expected to be on his way to Chelsea, say . However, at the final moment Tottenham have leapfrogged their London rivals to seal a deal with Swansea and complete the signing of the Spaniard.
Having scored 15 goals for the Swans last season, he will bring proven Premier League experience to Wembley. He will likely compete with Harry Kane as a back-up option, rather than replace him, but his ability from the bench could make a real difference for Mauricio Pochettino and represents a clear upgrade from Vincent Janssen.
Spurs fans will be hoping that Llorente can recreate that form at Wembley, where he will work with his new manager. Having kept Swansea up last season with his goals, he will be sorely missed in south Wales but few will begrudge him one last shot at the big time with a return to Champions League football. That said, Chelsea fans are not quite so happy at the fact that he has joined their London rivals in what is perceived as yet another failure to fulfill Antonio Conte’s requests.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the news:
Spurs confirmed the deal…
It's done! ✅ 👍🏼
— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial)
But only after a picture emerged of him in a Tottenham shirt…
That's Fernando Llorente!
— Kristof Terreur (@HLNinEngeland)
Not like we knew 10 hours ago..
— Hotspur Edition (@HotspurEdition)
And their fans were pleased…
Really do want Llorente be perfect back up for Kane winner great attitude won the lot and great scoring record
— Graham Roberts (@GrahamRoberts4)
If we actually get the Llorente from last year, £15m is an absolute steal. PL and CL experience and scores goals for fun.
— Hotspur Edition (@HotspurEdition)
Simply put, Llorente is a proper striker & great foil/back up to Kane. Far better option than Jansen has proved to be.
— Anthony Froom (@AnthonyFroom)
One of the best bits was that he was a Chelsea target…

— Footy Accumulators (@FootyAccums)
Don't care if Llorente's good. We're nicking him off Chelsea and that's enough for me.
— Charlie Lloyd Thomas (@CharlieLloydT)
And Chelsea fans weren’t too pleased…

Though not everyone was quite so impressed…
Just woken up to see we've agreed a deal for Llorente. Have I traveled back in time to about 2012?
— Noz Ahmed (@NozAhmed)
Our two attacking signings no doubt will be Llorente and a currently unfit Barkley how so very disappointing and so Spursy..
— Stuart M (@Stu_M26)
Llorente when he meets up with the rest of the squad
— Simply (@Simply_Spurs)
A few hours left and we are hoping that the best we can get is Llorente & a Gomes loan done. That's really poor I'm afraid
