How Twitter reacted to Benjamin Mendy joining Manchester City for £52million
Pep Guardiola has taken his summer spending over the £200 million mark after bringing in another full-back in the form of Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy.
The Frenchman joins on a six-year deal for a reported fee of £52 million, as reported by the , which is an unbelievable amount of profit for Monaco, who paid just £11 million for him last summer.
Mendy becomes Manchester City’s first left-back signing and comes in at a crucial time for Guardiola, who had let both Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov leave during this window.
The 23-year-old takes the number 22 shirt and he is due to join City’s pre-season tour in the United States.
After such a stellar campaign last season, it comes as no surprise to see the Frenchman join a Premier League side, with his energy perfect for the division.
Mendy’s impressive ability to get forward and track back for a whole game were displayed throughout Monaco’s title winning campaign and the 23-year-old was a key part of their tactical set-up.
Despite failing to find the back of the net, Mendy was integral going forward, creating 20 key opportunities and laying on five goals for his teammates. His chance creation was the second best of all Monaco’s defenders, being bettered by only Djibril Sidibe.
Having left the French club, he, and City fans, will be hoping he can continue his impressive form.
Upon joining, Mendy, speaking to Manchester City’s , said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester City,”
“They are one of Europe’s leading Clubs and in Pep Guardiola they have a manager committed to playing attacking football.”
He’s clearly happy to have signed, but how did social media reflect on the move? Here is how Twitter reacted:
