How Twitter reacted as Michael Carrick was named as the new Manchester United captain

After Wayne Rooney’s departure back to boyhood club Everton was confirmed last week, the big question around Old Trafford has concerned who would take over his role as Manchester United’s first-team captain.

With the likes of Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera and David de Gea in the mix, Manchester United’s  announced that veteran midfielder Michael Carrick will take over the reins next season.

The 35-year-old has been at Old Trafford since arriving from Tottenham in 2006, playing over 300 Premier League matches, and he is the last surviving member of the 2008 Champions League triumph.

And, speaking about his takeover of the armband, Carrick said: “It feels great and it is such a huge honour to captain such a great club.

“It is my 12th year now and I came as a 25-year-old. I never thought I could be here for so long and achieve so much.

“Now, to lead the boys and look after the young boys, to guide them, it is a nice thing and a real pleasure.”

It was Manchester United’s official Twitter account that kicked things off on social media…

And a lot of United fans were thrilled with the decision…
