How much money Jean-Philippe Mateta cost Crystal Palace this season after damaging five corner flags

Jean-Philippe Mateta has become a Premier League sensation across the last two seasons at Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman has bagged 33 goals in his last two Premier League campaigns, blossoming into a talismanic figure for Crystal Palace ever since Oliver Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson.

Manchester United are even keen on signing Mateta amidst his rise to stardom.

One detail which has aided the Crystal Palace No.14 in achieving hero status is his trademark celebration, where he kicks the corner flag to the tune of thousands of fans shouting “boom” in response.

However, Jean-Philippe Mateta has actually caused some damage with this move.

Jean-Philippe Mateta caused £39.95 worth of damage last season

Sky Sports have created a brief fact file of Mateta’s 2024/25 campaign, including his numbers in the air – he won 49 aerial duels – and other details about his season.

Interestingly, it was also detailed that the 27-year-old had damaged five corner flags last season, having kicked 14 in total after scoring 14 goals in 37 Premier League appearances.

Sky Sports claim that £39.95 worth of damage was caused to corner flags, which is a drop in the ocean for Mateta when you consider he earns £50,000-a-week at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace need to almost double Jean-Philippe Mateta’s salary

The man born in Sevran is currently in a contract dispute at Crystal Palace.

Alan Nixon believes the striker wants £90,000-a-week to stay in south London, with his current terms expiring in 24 months, and TBR Football understand Mateta has already spoken to Manchester United amidst this uncertainty over his future at Selhurst Park.

Seeing as Eddie Nketiah earns £90,000-a-week in SE25, but is performing nowhere near the level of Mateta with only three goals in 29 Premier League appearances this season, Crystal Palace should meet his demands.

If the Eagles opt not to pay such a sum, another Premier League club would surely jump to do so, given how prolific the FA Cup winner has been in the last two campaigns.
