How much longer can West Ham tolerate Pedro Obiang’s form?
West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang has been in and out of the starting XI this season, with his form certainly varying and he flopped once again at the weekend.
The 26-year-old was a passenger in the 1-1 draw with Huddersfield before being substituted off in the second-half and was extremely sloppy in possession.
He doesn’t appear to possess the quality to become a regular starter under manager Manuel Pellegrini, so should the boss consider a midfielderevamp in the January transfer window?
Declan Rice has been the most consistent performer in the centre of the park at the London Stadium this campaign, while captain Mark Noble always turns in steady displays without setting the world alight.
Injured pair Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez have been unable to make serious impacts since their summer arrivals, which is why the central midfield position remains a weak area for the Hammers.
It’s absolutely crucial that West Ham have a few real quality options in midfield to select from if they are to have any realistic hopes of pushing back up the table towards European positions.
Obiang’s recent form suggests he doesn’t quite have the consistency or quality to make it under Pellegrini and the Spaniard is a squad player at best.
It would be interesting to see if West Ham are willing to back the manager financially once again in January after the number of additions in the summer.
