How Manchester United’s players rated in their late show against Stoke
Wayne Rooney wrote his name into the Manchester United history books with a stunning late free-kick to earn his side a point against a dogged Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.
With a minute left of the five added on, Rooney bent a superb strike from the left-hand touchline into the top corner to become Manchester United’s outright top goal-scorer, overtaking Bobby Charlton’s mark of 249.
The 31-year-old’s injury-time equaliser spared United’s blushes after a frustrating afternoon at Stoke, extending their unbeaten run in all competitions to 17 matches.
For the second time in the space of a week, however, Jose Mourinho’s side had to earn a point the hard way, coming from behind after Juan Mata deflected Erik Pieters’ cross past a helpless David de Gea to give Stoke a first-half lead.
Stoke’s advantage came hugely against the run of play, and despite United racking up almost 70% possession at the Bet365 Stadium they put up a strong resistance – until record-maker Rooney took centre stage.
