How Manchester United rated in their 2-1 UEFA Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid
Manchester United, winners of the Europa League, faced Real Madrid, who retained their Champions League crown, in the UEFA Super Cup, and it was the Spanish club that came out on top as 2-1 winners.
Zinedine’s Zidane side, who began the game with Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, took the lead Casemiro in the first-half. The Brazilian turned in Dani Carvajal’s early cross, yet the midfielder looked slightly offside on second viewing.
The Spanish Champions doubled their lead through a beautiful bit of play, with Isco and Bale combining before the energetic attacking midfielder former steered the ball past David de Gea.
Romelu Lukaku put United back in the tie after missing a great opportunity but Real Madrid held on to their lead and claimed the UEFA Super Cup.
Jose Mourinho’s side suffered their first defeat of the season, but how did his men rate against Real Madrid?
David de Gea – 7
The Spaniard was beaten twice, yet he had little chance of saving either effort, but elsewhere, he made some tidy saves. He managed a strong palm to Toni Kroos effort in the first-half and he turned a late Madrid effort excellently over the bar.
Antonio Valencia – 8
The captain was one of United’s bright sparks down the right wing and he set the example for his side. The Ecuadorian was a driving force, going past Marcelo with his pace and delivering some dangerous crosses, one of which Marouane Fellaini should have done better with.
Victor Lindelof – 6
One of three new signings making their debut, Lindelof will certainly be looking for better over the course of the season. The former Benfica man was often caught slightly off the pace, losing Casemiro during the build-up to Madrid’s first goal while making numerous lazy tackles.
Chris Smalling – 6
Similarly to Lindelof, Smalling was often a second slow, yet he did make some key blocks and like always, he was willing to put his body on the line for his side. An average performance from the Englishman.
Matteo Darmian – 6
With Mourinho trying a 3-5-2, Darmian was often caught between centre-half and left-back, without doing either one spectacularly. He looked more comfortable in the second-half in a back four, but the Italian was sloppy throughout.
Nemanja Matic – 7
The Serbian looks like the perfect United midfielder, but he’ll have to improve on his Super Cup showing. Matic was tidy on the ball but his distribution was slow and he failed to dictate the tempo.
Ander Herrera – 4
The energetic Spaniard was nonexistent before his substitution as he failed to do anything on the pitch. His usual box-to-box play-style was subdued and rightfully, he was taken off for Marouane Fellaini.
Paul Pogba – 6
Despite looking good in pre-season, Pogba was underwhelming against Madrid. The Frenchman never drove his side forward and his passing was poor. He also failed to steer a free header in the second-half.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 5
The Armenian was another of United’s poor attackers, failing to penetrate Madrid’s backline. He was lucky to survive the 90 minutes and will be hoping to forget this performance before the start of the Premier League season.
Jesse Lingard – 4
Slow and ineffective, the Englishman’s lack of pace stuttered the Red Devil’s going forward, yet he was tasked with an unusual role as a left wing-back in the first-half. He certainly suffered in Mourinho’s odd tactical ploy.
Romelu Lukaku – 6
The Belgian will be scrutinised all season, but that doesn’t subtract from his mediocre display on his debut. Lukaku grabbed a goal but also blazed a great chance over the bar.
Aside from his finishing, his hold-up play was average and he will need to start working harder for his side defensively.
Marcus Rashford (sub – 45′) – 7
The Englishman gave Carvajal nightmares in the second-half with his direct running and he could have leveled the scoring if only his finishing was better. His pace gave United an outlet but more work on his free-kicks is needed.
Marouane Fellaini (sub – 56′) – 6
It is hard not to go direct when Fellaini is on, but United launched balls to him and he failed to produce for his side. He had a timid effort on goal and suffered an injury, quite the usual for the clumsy Belgian.
It is hard to see how United can progress with Fellaini in midfield, from his showing tonight, his sideways passing is hugely damaging to United’s tempo.
