How likely is a Dimitri Payet move from West Ham to Marseille this January?
A number of are today claiming that Dimitri Payet’s former club Marseille could look to bring him back to France only 18 months after allowing him to leave to join West Ham United last summer. They claim that the club is in contact with the 29-year-old, who has frequently spoken of his affection for the club on the south coast of France, and may look to launch a bid this month to pry him away from the London Stadium.
Would West Ham allow him to leave now?
Only if they have to. Slaven Bilic has stated numerous times that their key man won’t be sold and club bosses are unlikely to force his sale unless a really lucrative bid is made. With Paris Saint-Germain seemingly not as interested as first thought in the summer, and Manchester United only linked tentatively, Marseille are unlikely to be forced to make a massive offer. Payet’s importance to the Hammers is clear with his involvement in eleven goals in 21 games so far this season, so they won’t let him go easily.
Is a move likely?
Payet has spoken about his doubts about his future publicly and it seems as though he is growing increasingly unhappy in a West Ham side struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table, so he may look to force a move. That could be his only way out with four and a half years still left on his contract and Marseille, a club he holds in high regard, not made of money. The club from the south of France would be keen to add him to boost their chances of climbing up from eighth in Ligue Une, with Payet somewhat of a hero in France after his displays at the European Championships.
Verdict?
6/10 – It seems unlikely that a move will take place in January, but it’s hard to see Payet donning the claret and blue of West Ham next season. He is thought to be reluctant to force a move mid-season and with Marseille lacking the cash to spend big, that could end any hopes of a January move.
