How Leeds United left Fortuna Dusseldorf stunned during negotiations to sign Ao Tanaka
Leeds United managed to sign Isaac Schmidt and Ao Tanaka on transfer deadline day.
The pair followed Jayden Bogle, Largie Ramazani, Manor Solomon, Joe Rodon and Alex Cairns to Elland Road, although the Whites actually left Fortuna Dusseldorf shocked during negotiations to sign Tanaka.
So, what did Leeds United do to surprise the German outfit? Let’s take a look…
Leeds United surprised Fortuna Dusseldorf in Ao Tanaka talks
A story from in Germany now shares some finer details regarding the Japan international’s move to Yorkshire.
Firstly, the German news outlet explain that Fortuna Dusseldorf initially rejected Leeds United’s €2.5m (£2.1m) bid for Tanaka – instead demanding €4m (£3.4m) for the central midfielder.
Bild state that the 2.Bundesliga side did not expect Leeds United to return with a second bid after sending that counter offer, especially with such a little amount of time remaining in the transfer window.
However, Fortuna Dusseldorf are said to have been left shocked when the Whites returned to the negotiating table, eventually wrapping up a €3.5m (£2.9m) deal for the 25-year-old, with an additional €500,000 (£421,000) to come in bonuses.

The German side are said to have had no intention whatsoever of selling Tanaka, but were happy to accept €4m (£3.4m) given the fact he only had 11 months remaining on his contract, a bid they genuinely never expected to see arrive in their inbox on transfer deadline day, according to Bild.
Potential bargain
Leeds may have got themselves a £3.4m bargain on transfer deadline day.
Interestingly, Tanaka has actually been compared to Jude Bellingham of all midfielders – by the Bundesliga’s official website, no less.

The man from Kawasaki looked like a very tidy footballer in his ten minute cameo against Hull City on Saturday, showing admirable composure in midfield and a willingness to use both feet – WhoScored shows that he completed of his 20 passes while also making one interception.
With plenty of room for improvement at the age of just 25, Leeds United might have secured a bargain in Tanaka.
