How Paul Pogba orchestrated Manchester United’s terrific 4-0 victory over Swansea City
Off the back of a stellar performance against West Ham, Manchester United managed to repeat the 4-0 scoreline with a comfortable victory against Paul Clement’s Swansea City side.
Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils looked as though they were heading for an uninspiring 1-0 win until they stepped up a level in the final ten minutes.
Three goals in four minutes put the contest to bed and United maintained their place at the top of the table. Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba, all of whom scored against West Ham, found the back of the net for the second game running.
It was the latter of those goal scorers, however, who had the most impact on the game. Pogba, who has started the season in fine form, was involved from the offset, both positively and negatively.
The club record signing was a targeted by the Swans on and off the field and it seemed as though the intensity was getting to him after he was booked for a late tackle on Tom Carroll.
Moments later, the Frenchman went in aggressively on Martin Olsson and, despite calls for a second yellow from the stands, Pogba escaped an early bath.
This call had a decisive impact on the tie as the United midfielder went on to influence the outcome of the match.
Firstly, the Frenchman’s header late in the first-half was turned into the back of the net by Eric Bailly, who opened the scoring with his first goal for United. The Ivory Coast international reacted quickest after Pogba’s header came back off the bar via a Lukasz Fabianski save.
In the second-half, Pogba came to fruition. With Marouane Fellaini’s arrival on to the pitch came more freedom for the Frenchman.
Early on, Pogba whistled a free-kick over the bar from 20 yards, just one of three efforts he had on goal at the Liberty Stadium.
Wherever United needed their midfielder to be, he was there, controlling play, taking opponents on and winning the ball back for his side. While maintaining an 81% pass accuracy, Pogba went past his opponent on two occasions and dispossessed his man three times.
It wasn’t until the closing stages that the 24-year-old really made his impact, though. Moments after Romely Lukaku doubled United’s lead, Pogba made a charge through Swansea’s defence and finished with a clever chip.
To end an impressive performance, the Frenchman assisted his compatriot Anthony Martial to make it 4-0. Mourinho’s side top the Premier League and their supporters will be keen to see how far they can go, especially with Paul Pogba in such fine form.
