How could Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool midfield look with the £65million-rated Naby Keita?
Liverpool are readying their side for the 2017/18 season and it’s worth taking a closer inspection at their midfielder.
The Reds are likely to have at least six first-team midfielders to use throughout the season and, despite wanting to compete in every competition, manager Jurgen Klopp will no doubt have some very difficult decisions to make when it comes to selecting his midfield.
One thing is for sure, and that is the way they’ll setup. Liverpool will field three midfielders, as they have done a majority of the time since Klopp took charge in 2015, but who will occupy these three positions?
Philippe Coutinho
The Brazilian magician enjoyed his most prolific campaign for the Merseyside club last season, managing thirteen goals and seven assists from a left-wing position.
However, his move to the middle-of-the-park has been long overdue. Centrally is where he can truly dictate the play with his vision, passing range and goal-scoring ability.
Towards the tail-end of last season Klopp did shift Coutinho into the left-sided central-midfield position and, in the two games he played there, against West Ham and Middlesbrough, the ex-Inter man scored three and assisted once – a sign of things to come.
Emre Can
The powerful German had a very good season for the Reds last time out, filling the void that captain Jordan Henderson left when he was out of the side, and more.
A formidable presence, Emre Can occupied the ‘number six’ role to great effect, bringing athleticism, leadership and a fair few goals to the table.
The German scored one of the goals of the season against Watford and, according to the , he will snub a move to Juventus to sign a new contract with the Reds.
Rejecting the Italian giants will mean Can will expect regular game-time and, in the number six role, Liverpool fans could see the former Bayer Leverkusen star fulfill his potential.
Naby Keita
Signing Naby Keita from Red Bull Leipzig will complete the balanced midfield trio. According to the , Liverpool are expected to better their initial bid of £57 million in an effort to sign the Leipzig star, who is believed to be acquirable for around £65 million.
The Guinean would bring fantastic passing, dribbling, speed, and dynamism to the team and will, no doubt, help in the counter-pressing tactics the Reds have been synonymous with since the charismatic Klopp took over at Anfield.
Keita’s energy, along with the stability Can provides and the creativity of Coutinho, would round off a superbly balanced midfield.
