How Chelsea and Tottenham could qualify for the Champions League this season without finishing in the top four
Tottenham and Chelsea both missed out on UEFA Champions League football this season after underwhelming 2023/24 campaigns.
Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League last term – whereas Chelsea ended up sixth – which secured them spots in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League respectively after Manchester United won the FA Cup.
Tottenham need a strong end to the 2024/25 campaign if they are to qualify for any European football next season – with Ange Postecoglou currently sitting 14th at Spurs – although Chelsea are much improved on last season and sit fourth.

However, even if both London giants end up outside of the top four, there is still a way they could qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
How seven English clubs could be involved in the UEFA Champions League next season
UEFA have announced that two leagues will be given an extra UEFA Champions League qualification spot this season – dependant on how clubs fare in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.
UEFA will add up coefficient points – meaning the major leagues across Europe are effectively competing in a ranking called the association club coefficient.

Each win for a club in any UEFA competitions this term earns the respective league two points, while a draw gets one point – there are no points awarded for a loss.
Furthermore, UEFA – who also award large chunks of prize money – will grant bonus points dependant on where a club finishes in the league phase of a UEFA competitions this season, with additional bonus points for each successful knockout round.
The points of all those involved from each league are then added up and divided by the number of clubs who started the season in UEFA competitions – to determine the association club coefficient average.
As things stand, England are in a strong position to secure that fifth UEFA Champions League qualification spot – although Italy and Serie A are close behind.
Association | Points | Clubs | Average Points |
---|---|---|---|
England | 146.250 | 7 | 20.892 |
Italy | 138.500 | 8 | 17.312 |
Spain | 120.250 | 7 | 17.178 |
Portugal | 73.750 | 5 | 14.750 |

How the Premier League could secure a sixth and seventh UEFA Champions League qualification spot
UEFA also welcome the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League into the following edition of the UEFA Champions League – regardless of where they finish in their respective leagues.
Therefore, Liverpool, who could lose Darwin Nunez, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United all have a chance of qualifying by becoming European champions this season – with all six still involved in their respective European journeys.
