Newcastle United currently have eight players out on loan in the Football League or abroad.
Steve Bruce will be keeping his tabs on their progress and judging whether they can make an impact in the first-team soon. Here are the eight Newcastle loanees and an update on how they are doing.
Too early to tell
Two Newcastle players have had slow starts at their new temporary clubs. Between Rolando Aarons at Wycombe Wanderers and Achraf Lazaar at Cosenza, there has been less than 150 minutes of league action played.
Aarons was seen as a coup for League One side Wycombe when they landed him. The 23-year-old winger made his debut against Lincoln City but picked up an injury. Since then, he has only played in the EFL Trophy and as a substitute against Peterborough United.
Lazaar spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday alongside Aarons. But Bruce did not give either their first-team chance. Lazaar is now at Cosenza in the Italian Serie B but he has only played twice for them.
Mixed bag
Jacob Murphy has continued to show that he is an inconsistent player during his loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday. The 24-year-old scored on his debut but has since been dropped to the bench. He has not started for the Owls for several games.
Dan Barlaser has also had a mixed spell. The 22-year-old started the season as a regular for Rotherham United but was recently dropped to the bench and snubbed on a couple of occasions. However, he has roared back with two starts in a row and two impressive performances.
Who’s struggling?
Newcastle fans will be scratching their head at the curious case of Elias Sorensen. The Danish striker is prolific for Newcastle’s U23 team but has struggled on loan in two different spells.
His loan spell at Blackpool was cut short last season. This prompted the 20-year-old to drop down to League Two and join Carlisle United. He is yet to score a competitive goal in seven outings (he scored in a friendly against Rangers) but this is partly down to a lack of opportunity.
Who’s impressing?
Freddie Woodman, 22, is really starting to show his first-team credentials. The England U21 goalkeeper is shining between the sticks for Championship promotion hopefuls Swansea City. He has kept four clean sheets and conceded just nine goals in 11 league matches. He will be pushing Martin Dubravka in the near future.
League Two duo Kelland Watts and Liam Gibson are also impressing. Watts is at Stevenage and features regularly at centre-back or right-back. Gibson is Grimsby Town’s first-choice left-back, although he was dropped at the weekend.
