‘Hopefully, Arsenal’: Mat Ryan eyes permanent Emirates transfer ahead of Brighton return
Mat Ryan has told that he wants to seal a permanent transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion to Arsenal following his loan spell.
The Australian moved to the Emirates Stadium in January to spend the second half of the season in north London. He rarely featured under Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard persisting with Bernd Leno as his number one.
But despite only making , the 29-year-old hopes to secure a switch in the summer market and stay with the club he supported as a kid.
Arsenal are open to striking a deal with Brighton for Ryan, with reporting recently that talks were set to begin. He also and turned in solid performances when called upon.
Ryan hopes he has done enough to secure a move with one year remaining on his Brighton contract. He will now wait to see what offers arrive.
“I’ve got full faith in the team around me – my agent, family, friends – that we’re going to get a couple of options hopefully and go about making what’s going to be the best decision for me,” Ryan .
“Hopefully, Arsenal becomes one of those options as well that we can look at and see what can happen there, but at the minute it’s still quite early. The season’s just finished. I’m taking it day by day and seeing where my journey takes me.”
TBR’s view: Ryan is a solid back-up for Arsenal
Arteta may not have given Ryan many opportunities to feature for Arsenal, but the boyhood Gunners fan is a solid back-up option for them to sign in the summer.
He arrived to take over the number two role from Alex Runarsson and clearly left his mark, given club staff are noted to have been impressed. Runarsson, meanwhile, has been made less than a year after being signed from Dijon for just over .
Ryan also clearly wants to be an Arsenal player, so Arteta would not be signing someone who is happy to collect their pay cheque just to sit on the bench. Instead, they would have a player who can offer a commanding and authoritive presence between the goalposts when needed.
