‘Historic moment’: Former Rangers star recalls celebrations after iconic goal against Celtic

Old Firm derbies have produced their share of notable winners over the years, but few were quite so dramatic as that which crowned the 2002 Scottish Cup champions.

A classic meeting of the country’s top two sides was heading for extra time with the sides level at 2-2, but in the second minute of injury-time Peter Lovenkrands stooped to head home his second from a Neil McCann cross.

Lovenkrands, who went on to play for Schalke, Newcastle and Birmingham, scored a few big goals in his time at Ibrox but it’s his cup final winner that has come to define his six years in Glasgow.

Speaking to , the Dane reminisced about celebrations that will always be cherished memories.

He said: ““Looking back so many years later you can still feel and see how much it meant not just to me but the fans as well. BBC replayed that full game again during lockdown last year. I was sat with my wife and two kids and watched it all again.

“It was the first time my girls had watched it. They’d heard about it and seen fans coming up to me to talk about it before but never quite understood what it was all about.

“Now they understand. It was so exciting to relive the moment with them. I put a post on social media while watching it – a picture of my strip which still hangs on a wall in the house – and the response from fans was amazing.

“Eighteen years later they were still saying ‘Thanks’ and that they had goosebumps all over again. That’s when it sinks in just how historic a moment it was.

“At the time of the actual winning goal I was so exhausted my first thought was, ‘Thank God we’re not going to extra time!’

“It was on the bus on the way back to Ibrox that it began to sink in. I was sat up the back and Barry (Ferguson) called me to the front as we got back to Govan.

“I was still a young boy remember. When I got to the front of the bus the whole street was full of supporters and there were more piling out of pubs.

“The bus could barely move! Barry put me front and centre and that’s when it sunk in, the fans were showing their love to me.

“Same at Ibrox. I was standing on the marble staircase and Arthur Numan grabbed me and dragged me out the front door. The whole street erupted.

“It was pretty clear then I had done something special. These are the moments that live with you for life.”

The current crop of Rangers players are aiming to crown a superb season with victory in the same competition.

The Premiership champions begin their Scottish Cup campaign with a third-round tie at Ibrox on Sunday, with Cove Rangers the visitors.
