‘His instincts are always spot-on’… Sky pundit hails Leeds youngster’s efforts v Bristol City
Leeds United defender Archie Gray has been praised by Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe for his efforts against Bristol City on Friday night.
The Whites academy graduate has enjoyed an outstanding breakthrough season and kept up the good work in the Championship clash at Ashton Gate.
Gray covered pretty much every blade of grass on the pitch, initially playing at right-back before moving up into midfield later on in the match.
The 17-year-old has been great all season, but on Friday night, he really looked a cut above, showing amazing reading of the game in a performance more like that of a 27-year-old in his prime.
Gray weighed in with some great tackles and ensured that his direct opponents simply could not pass. In addition, he also completed three dribbles, the most of any Leeds player on the night.

In the 80th minute, Anis Mehmeti sought to get in for City, but the Leeds talent was on hand to expertly guide the ball out of play.
Hinchcliffe liked what he saw, : “Archie Gray plays with such maturity. His instincts are always spot on. It’s not even his natural position at right-back.”
Usually, if a 17-year-old player is turning out for the Under-21s – as opposed to the Under-18s – and taking part in the odd senior training session and a few minutes here and there, that’s amazing in itself.
However, Gray is a regular starter for a Championship promotion-chasing side, and delivering displays that are on par with – and in Friday’s case a cut above – many seasoned pros.
It’ll be exciting to see how he develops in the coming years. If he continues on this trajectory, he’s heading right to the very top, talking regular England starter level.
Leeds climb into Championship top two with narrow win at Bristol City
Leeds dominated proceedings against the Robins, taking the lead in the 48th minute through Wilfried Gnonto’s second goal of the season.
The Italy international ran onto a speculative Junior Firpo ball forward, raced through the opposition defence and fired home from inside the box.
Leeds’ victory saw them edge up to second in the Championship table, the first time in the season that they’ve moved up into the automatic promotion places.
Daniel Farke’s charges are next in league action next Saturday when they host Rotherham United at Elland Road.
Leeds are also in FA Cup action in midweek, making the lengthy trip to Plymouth Argyle for a fourth-round replay on Tuesday evening.
