‘He’s very good’: Conte says he can count on 24-year-old Tottenham player
Antonio Conte has hinted that he would like Steven Bergwijn to stay at Tottenham Hotspur amid reports linking him with Ajax, suggesting that the forward brings qualities that no-one else in the Spurs squad has – .
Bergwijn is one of the Tottenham players attracting attention this month. It was reported this week that Ajax had made a £15 million bid for the 24-year-old.
That offer had been rejected by Spurs. But the Eredivisie side are planning to make a fresh bid, .
With players such as Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli , you could understand why Tottenham may be tempted to cash-in on Bergwijn. He has struggled to make a consistent impact during his time in North London.
‘I count on him’
In fact, his time under Conte is quite a good reflection of his whole time at Tottenham. He produced a brilliant display against West Ham in the Carabao Cup. However, he has struggled to cement a spot in the side in the Premier League. And he has also been sidelined of late with injury.
Nevertheless, when asked about Bergwijn’s future, Conte seemed to hint that he wanted to keep him.
“For sure, in my period at Tottenham, he was injured, he was injured for a long time but I showed him that when he’s in a good physical condition, I gave him the chance to show that he’s a good player,” he said, .
“For sure, Bergwijn is a Tottenham player and he’s very close to coming back. I think that after the game against Chelsea, he can start having training sessions with us. I count on him, also because he’s a player with different characteristics to Sonny, Lucas and then Harry.
“He’s very good in one on ones, he’s a creative player that we don’t have in our squad.”
Tottenham must only let Bergwijn go if signing an upgrade is impossible without sale
As Conte suggests, Bergwijn can offer a lot. He can play in a variety of positions. And he ticks a lot of boxes.
Selling him therefore, may not be a smart move – unless they need the money to secure an upgrade. If the likes of Ndombele and Dele stick around, Tottenham may need to raise funds some other way to bring signings in.
It still seems too soon to write Bergwijn off. And with that, Tottenham should resist the urge to let him go.
