‘He’s got loads of ability’: Sky pundit wowed by £4m Leeds player’s display v Newcastle

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto has been praised by Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison for his efforts against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Jesse Marsch’s Whites headed to St James’ Park to take on Eddie Howe’s Magpies for their final Premier League fixture of 2022.

Gnonto has been a revelation for Leeds. When he joined late on in the summer transfer window, he was expected to be one for the future.

However, the signing from FC Zurich quickly staked a claim for a place in the squad and eventually a spot in the starting XI.

Against Newcastle, Gnonto was quick off the mark, trying his luck from 25 yards out after just three minutes.

The Italian was a constant thorn in Newcastle’s side, weighing in with efforts and key passes, as well as winning free kicks.

Leeds and Newcastle remained level going into the break, but Gnonto had done enough to prompt Morrison to single him out for praise.

“Leeds will be happy,” Morrison said on .

“Gnonto has been good, Leeds’ liveliest player. He’s got loads of ability and caused Trippier a lot of problems on the left-hand side.

“Newcastle’s finish hasn’t been good enough, but they’ve got the likes of Saint-Maximin and Wilson to call upon.”

Jesse Marsch ended up subbing Gnonto off in the 69th minute.

Just two minutes earlier, the 19-year-old had picked up a booking for not standing far enough away at Kieran Trippier’s free-kick.

Nonetheless, the decision to take Gnonto off didn’t go down well with some Leeds fans.

The Whites ended up drawing 0-0 with Newcastle, stretching their winless run to three games.
