According to the , the Dutch giants failed with an initial £15million bid for Bergwijn and will attempt a follow-up offer.

Tottenham are reportedly hoping to recoup as much of their initial £27million outlay as possible.

Bergwijn was Jose Mourinho’s first signing at Tottenham in January 2020.

The 24-year-old hit the ground running at Spurs, scoring in his first three home league games.

Since then, however, Bergwijn has struggled for confidence and fitness.

He scored just once in 35 appearances last season, and has one goal from 13 outings this term.

Romano, speaking to , gave an insight into Tottenham’s transfer situation.

The Italian touched upon several players Spurs are reportedly looking to offload before bringing new ones in.

“The problem is about selling players,” said Romano. “They need to sell players.

“So they want Ndombele to leave the club, they’ve offered him to roma but roma are going for different players.

“They need the same for Bergwijn. He’s going to leave the club with Ajax interested in a move. Let’s see if they’ll be able to do it.

“Also Dele Alli. Keep an eye on him because they’re still looking for solutions and some swap deal could be the solution.

“Tottenham need to sell some players then they will jump into a new centre-back, Conte wants one as soon as possible.”
