‘He’s exciting’: New signing Loris Karius names the Newcastle United man he’s always found it difficult to play against
The transfer window may have closed nearly two weeks ago, but Newcastle United are still doing business.
Yesterday, the Magpies added former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius to their squad.
The 29-year-old was available as a free transfer after leaving Union Berlin at the end of the season.
Nick Pope has made himself first choice at St. James’ Park, and has been ‘excellent’ so far this season.
Pope’s deputy Karl Darlow has picked up an injury, and so Karius could find himself on the bench for Newcastle’s next game.
This would be an upgrade for Karius on last season, where he didn’t appear in a single match day squad for Union Berlin.
Newcastle actually offered Darlow to Manchester United this summer, but Erik ten Hag’s side ended up signing teammate Martin Dubravka.
Karius excited to work with Howe
“I’m excited (to work with Eddie Howe). I know him quite a bit now from playing against him and it was always very difficult to play against.
“He’s a very exciting coach and he plays really attractive football, so I’m really excited to work with him.”
The rest of the Premier League would agree with Karius that Howe’s teams are difficult to play against.
Newcastle have only lost a single match this season, thanks to a last-minute goal by Fabio Carvalho at Liverpool.
Karius is the fourth defensive reinforcement Newcastle have made this summer after Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett.
Howe has made his Newcastle team hard to beat without sacrificing any attacking flair.
“We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group.
“He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.”
The German goalkeeper finally has a new club after spending a summer in limbo.
And it’s no surprise that he’s excited to work with Howe over the upcoming campaign and may make his debut in November’s Carabao Cup third round.
