‘He’s different’… Pundit suggests Newcastle have a player who reminds him of £55m Manchester City star
Craig Burley has compared Anthony Gordon with a Manchester City player as he discussed whether the Newcastle United star has boosted his chances of going to Euro 2024 with England.
Anthony Gordon was one of the headline inclusions in the starting lineup for Saturday’s friendly at Brazil at Wembley. The 23-year-old was making his debut for the Three Lions in the 1-0 loss.
Gordon has definitely earned his chance. The winger has scored nine goals and contributed six assists for Newcastle in the Premier League this season. Gordon has certainly managed to silence his doubters following a quiet first few months at St James’ Park.
Anthony Gordon compared with Manchester City star after England debut
There is now going to be a debate over whether Gordon will be on the plane to Euro 2024 this summer. England are blessed with so much depth and quality in those wide forward areas. So the Newcastle man is definitely facing a lot of competition.
Speaking on , Craig Burley was asked which players have improved their chances of going to the tournament with their performance against Brazil. And the pundit claimed Gordon is something of a wildcard – just like Jeremy Doku.

“I think Gordon has a chance because he’s a bit different to what they’ve got. A bit like Doku in a sense, that he’s different,” he said.
“He’s more direct and pacy, runs with the ball. A little bit more off the cuff than the likes of Foden and Jack Grealish and others. Not that he was brilliant, but I think his general season could see him [make the squad].”
Jeremy Doku may be the one to welcome comparison right now
Doku has had a mixed first season in the Premier League. The highlight, of course, came when he scored one and provided four assists in the 6-1 victory over Bournemouth.
Rio Ferdinand suggested at one stage that there was no winger in the league he would rather watch than Doku. But his form has been a little underwhelming as the campaign has gone on.
He has the ability to create things out of nothing. But sometimes when he gets the ball, you do wonder if he even knows what he is going to do.
The Belgian is only 21, so there is plenty of time for him to justify his price-tag. But perhaps on current form, it should be Doku who is pleased to be compared with Gordon.
