‘He’s brilliant’…Gary Neville left amazed by ‘world-class’ £22m Tottenham player during Newcastle game
Gary Neville was full of praise for Son Heung-min after the Tottenham Hotspur captain beat Kieran Trippier to set up Richarlison for their second goal against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Neville was speaking on (broadcast on 10/12; 17:08) after Son registered his second assist of the afternoon as Spurs took a 2-0 lead into the break in North London.
Son Heung-min was the star of the show in the first 45 minutes against Newcastle. Ange Postecoglou decided to deploy the skipper out on the left with Richarlison playing through the middle.

And that decision proved to be a masterstroke.

It was Son who set up Destiny Udogie for the opener. And he repeated the trick shortly after, with Kieran Trippier being made to look a little foolish in the process.
Son latched onto a poor header from Trippier. The 31-year-old then managed to get past his old teammate before cutting the ball back for Richarlison, who found himself just inside the six-yard box.
Obviously, it was a big moment for Richarlison given his struggles since moving to Tottenham. But Gary Neville was particularly impressed by the work from Son.
“They’ve deserved that, they really have. They’ve struggled to kill teams off in the last few weeks. Richarlison putting the work in defensively. And then, Kieran Trippier, who I couldn’t speak highly enough of from a defensive perspective makes a real mess of that. Gets under it, and it ends up with Son. And he’s brilliant, Son, he’s been fantastic in this first-half on that left-hand side,” he told .
“You don’t expect Trippier to get beat here. But he’s up against world-class in Son.”
Captain’s performance
Son has been such a brilliant leader for Tottenham since being given the armband in the summer. Spurs’ season would have been written off by many following the departure of Harry Kane and the nightmare that was last year.
But under Postecoglou, Tottenham are a completely different side. And Son has been absolutely sensational.
The star has certainly put the struggles of last year behind him. And he is potentially playing the best football of his Tottenham career right now.
