‘He’s available’: £45m player is now the most likely signing for Newcastle in January
Newcastle United may need to be active in the January transfer window.
Indeed, after Sandro Tonali’s ban, the Magpies are light in the midfield, and they are looking at a number of solutions in that area.
Speaking on the , Graeme Bailey has been discussing the state of play at Newcastle in terms of potential targets at the moment, and he’s named Kalvin Phillips as the player most likely to join the Tyneside club come the winter window.
Bailey says that Phillips is available and no other Champions League clubs are in for him, suggesting that he could well be headed to St James’ Park in a few months’ time.

Phillips most likely
Bailey shared what he knows about the midfielder.
“If you could pick one name who could rock up for us in January who would you give us?” Bailey was asked.
“Ultimately I think Kalvin Phillips is a long-term fit. I’ll play safe and say Kalvin Phillips for now. Let’s see how this PIF conversations go. He’s available, I don’t think any other Champions League club are in for him, Liverpool aren’t in for him, that’s not right, and Manchester United won’t have Champions League football for much longer,” Bailey said.
Could be inspired
As much as Phillips is out of favour at Manchester City right now, this could be an inspired signing by Newcastle.
Indeed, the Yorkshire Pirlo is still a very talented player – as he’s shown for England and Leeds over the years, and he’d suit Eddie Howe’s style to a tee.
Phillips played the best football of his career under Marcelo Bielsa when he was instructed to press high and play on the front-foot, and that’s exactly how Howe’s Newcastle also want to play.
This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on as we edge closer to January.
