‘He’s a contender’: Carragher says 25-year-old Tottenham star could win World Cup Player of the Tournament

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Tottenham forward Richarlison could win the Player of the Tournament at the World Cup.

Carragher wrote in his column for the that the 25-year-old is a genuine contender for the Golden Ball at the tournament in Qatar.

Richarlison is not a guaranteed starter for Spurs but he leads the line for Brazil and has spearheaded their frightening attack to make them favourites for glory.

Carragher on Richarlison

He wrote: “Because we are so familiar with these players having seen them week in, week out, there is no mystique like there was when watching World Cups in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

“(Then), the lack of media coverage of overseas football meant there was more excitement when seeing a ‘new’ name burst onto the international stage.

“30 years ago, everyone watching this World Cup would have been asking ‘who is this guy Richarlison, tearing it up for Brazil?’

“In 2022, he is being judged on perceptions of his Premier League consistency rather than the fact he is a contender for player of the tournament.”

Richarlison and Carragher have their history which has been played out on social media after comments about the forward going down easily.

When Richarlison was an Everton player, that spat was heightened by the Merseyside divide but he has of course since moved to Spurs.

If Brazil go all the way and win the World Cup, the chances are one of their players will win Player of the Tournament, and as it stands, Richarlison is as well placed to do that as anyone.
