Arsenal transfer news: Romano shares Depay update amid Gunners links

Arsenal have been linked with Netherlands international Memphis Depay in recent weeks.

A month ago, claimed Gunners manager Mikel Arteta was monitoring the 28-year-old.

With Arsenal losing Gabriel Jesus to a long-term injury, the report claimed Arsenal were considering Depay as cover.

Depay’s Barcelona contract expires at the end of the season, so he’d have been a relatively inexpensive signing.

That said, Arsenal’s reported interest in the Barca ace never seemed to go beyond the ‘keeping tabs’ level.

Besides, Depay didn’t appear keen on a Premier League return. He only had eyes for Atletico Madrid.

This is according to Fabrizio Romano, who has now declared “here we go” on the player’s move to the Spanish capital.

The reported Arsenal target will be heading to Madrid for a medical ahead of a €3-4m move from the Camp Nou.

Depay will pen a contract until the end of the 2024-25 campaign, added Romano.

It’s a bit of a shame that Arsenal have missed out on Depay, as he’d have been a good shout for the Gunners.

He’s an experienced player who knows what the Premier League is about, having played at Manchester United.

Although his spell at Old Trafford wasn’t particularly fruitful, he has developed massively as a player since then.

However, if Depay only had eyes for one club, there’s nothing more Arsenal could’ve done really.

The Gunners aren’t exactly desperate for attacking reinforcements at present.

Some cover would be nice, but they’re still coping fairly well.

We’re over the halfway point in the January transfer window, so let’s see whether Arsenal can get a new forward over the line.
