‘Here we go’: Fabrizio Romano claims Newcastle on brink of ‘sensational’ signing
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Nick Pope.
On Tuesday morning, reported that the Magpies were closing in on the Burnley goalkeeper.
Newcastle ‘were close to agreeing a deal’ for Pope, claimed the report.

Now, Romano has claimed on Twitter that the Magpies and Burnley have reached verbal agreement over the 30-year-old.
The paperwork will soon be signed, a deal is in place, personal terms have been agreed and a medical will be scheduled soon, he added.
Newcastle have also the sale of Freddie Woodman to Preston North End.
This frees up a slot in their goalkeeping ranks.
“Properly warm”
Pope would be a great shout for Newcastle as they look to build on last season’s 11th-place Premier League finish.
He is a talented and experienced keeper who could challenge Martin Dubravka for a starting spot.
Pope kept clean sheets in the Premier League last season, in 2020-21 and a staggering shutouts in 2019-20.
In July 2020, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp waxed lyrical about the keeper after a 1-1 draw between the two sides.
“Nick Pope was obviously warmed up,” he said, as quoted by .
“We warmed him up through the game and he was properly warm and had some really sensational saves.”
Meanwhile, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said Pope was “outstanding” in the penultimate game of the season.
Other Newcastle transfer targets
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has provided an update on Newcastle’s pursuit of Sven Botman and Hugo Ekitike.
He stressed that the deals hadn’t fallen through, but they’re not progressing at the moment.
Edwards also claimed that Newcastle are starting to lose patience in both sets of negotiations and are looking at alternative targets.
