Helen Ward shares emphatic Brennan Johnson verdict as Tottenham star scores for Wales v Iceland
Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson was among the goalscorers for Wales in their Nations League win over Iceland on Tuesday night.
The Spurs attacker’s effort helped the Dragons pull off an unlikely return to the Nations League’s top tier as they ran out 4-1 winners in Cardiff.
Johnson also provided the assist for Liam Cullen’s first international goal, providing an inviting cross for the Swansea City man to head home on 32 minutes.
The Tottenham man’s assist enabled Wales to draw level after Iceland had opened the scoring through Andri Gudjohnsen’s seventh-minute strike.
Cullen went on to put Craig Bellamy’s side in first-half injury time and the hosts never looked back, racing ahead in the second half.
Johnson made it 3-1 in the 65th minute as Cullen repaid the favour with an assist for the Spurs attacker to convert with a clinical finish.

Ward described the Tottenham forward’s finish as “fantastic” and “well-taken”, as well as suggesting he needed the goal to stop people “questioning” him.
“That was a fantastic finish from Brennan Johnson, exactly the finish he needed for Wales,” she said on BBC Radio Wales.
“People were still questioning him but that one-v-one clinical play is what we see him do for Spurs so often. It was a really well-taken goal.”
Wales’ win, combined with Turkey’s defeat to Montenegro, saw the Dragons win Group B4.

Johnson clocked up some impressive stats on Tuesday night, including a total of eight ground duels won and a pass accuracy percentage of 89 percent.
Although the 23-year-old’s consistency could do with some work, he has certainly shown that he has what it takes to impress at the highest level, and his future looks very bright.
