‘He’d be one of the first’… Pundit says 26-year-old Manchester United player must go on the transfer list now

Craig Burley has named the first Manchester United player Sir Jim Ratcliffe should be putting on the transfer list after Erik ten Hag’s side were beaten by Fulham on Saturday.

Manchester United’s winning run came to an end at the hands of Marco Silva’s side this weekend. And ultimately, United could have few complaints.

With Rasmus Hojlund injured, Marcus Rashford was picked to start up front. Unfortunately, it became clear just how important Hojlund has become to ten Hag’s side.

Manchester United told to sell Marcus Rashford

Rashford was one of a number of United players who proved to be incredibly poor against Fulham. And there was one stage where he seemed to annoy the fans by not tracking back.

Rashford scored 30 goals in all competitions last season. And while we are still in February, it is going to take something special for the 26-year-old to even get close to matching that tally this term. He has only found the back of the net five times in 31 games.

And speaking to , Craig Burley suggested that Steve Nicol has been proven right for expecting Rashford to drop off significantly this season. The pundit went on to insist that United would be right to look to move him on this summer.

“I tell you what, and I’ll give Stevie his credit here, when Marcus Rashford had this blistering season last year, he said he wouldn’t do it again next year. And I thought the boy would turn the corner and say, ‘do you know what, I want to be this player every year’,” he said.

“He’d be one of the first players – I mean, you’ve got your Antony’s and all that, complete waste of space, £100 million waste of space – Marcus Rashford would be one of the first players that I would be, if I was Sir Jim Ratcliffe, saying to, whether it’s ten Hag or whoever it is, he’s on the transfer list, because his attitude, that reverberates around the team.”

Squad overhaul needed as soon as possible

The criticism of Rashford highlights just how much work United have to do before they are back amongst the elite again.

On talent alone, the forward is one of the best players in the squad, if not the entire Premier League. And yet, some feel that Manchester United would be much better off without him.

And, as Burley notes with his comments on Antony, Rashford is not the anomaly within the ranks. There are a lot of big names who do not appear to be helping United move in the right direction.

So if they do receive a big offer for Rashford this summer, there may well be a number of Manchester United supporters who implore the club to cash in.
